Privacy policy
AeroCue is an iPhone app for following flights. This policy explains what information the app uses, what leaves your phone, and why. In short: most things stay on your phone, there are no ads or tracking, and you don't need an account.
AeroCue is run by Ilyas Esa, an independent developer in the United Kingdom. Questions or requests: [email protected].
What stays on your phone
- Your location. GPS is used to show where your plane is during the flight, to notice takeoff and landing, and to work out travel to the airport. It's processed on the phone. It only leaves the phone if you choose to back up your flights (see below).
- Your flights, notes and recorded flight paths, your passport stats and the places you've been.
- Your passport photo or Memoji. It isn't uploaded or included in backups. If you use Apple's Image Playground to style it, Apple processes that on your device.
- Camera. Used only to read the barcode on a boarding pass. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.
- Calendar. Read only when you choose to import past flights from it.
- Hotel details you add in Essentials.
What's sent to our server, and why
To show live flight information, the app asks AeroCue's server (hosted by Cloudflare) for data about a flight. The server asks our flight data provider, FlightAware, and passes the answer back.
| What is sent | Why |
|---|---|
| Flight numbers, routes, dates, airport codes and aircraft registrations you search for or track | To find flights, their status, gates, delays, positions and paths |
| Airport and route coordinates | For the turbulence forecast along your route and airport weather |
These requests don't include your name, email, location or any ID that identifies you. Answers are kept briefly on the server so that many people asking about the same flight share one lookup. The server doesn't keep a log of who asked for what.
Other services the app talks to directly
- Open-Meteo: weather forecasts and typical weather for your destination, using the destination's coordinates.
- Apple WeatherKit and Apple Maps: weather, maps, directions and place search. These are covered by Apple's privacy policy.
- Nager.Date: public holidays at your destination, using its country code.
- Exchange rates (open.er-api.com): currency rates for your destination.
None of these receive anything that identifies you beyond what any internet request carries (such as your IP address).
Optional account and backup
You can sign in with Apple to back up your flights and to carry a paid upgrade across devices. If you do, we store:
- Apple's anonymous user ID for AeroCue, and your email or name only if you choose to share them with us
- whether you have AeroCue Pro and until when
- your backup, if you make one: your saved flights, notes and recorded flight paths. Paths recorded with GPS include your positions during those flights.
This is stored with Cloudflare. You can delete your account and backup at any time in the app (Settings → Account → Delete account), which removes them from our server.
Purchases
Any purchase in AeroCue is handled by Apple. We never see your card or payment details. If you have an account, we record only whether Pro is active and when it ends.
What we don't do
- No advertising, and no advertising or analytics SDKs.
- No selling or sharing of your information.
- No tracking across other apps or websites.
Children
AeroCue isn't aimed at children and doesn't knowingly collect information from them.
Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law you can ask to see, correct or delete information we hold about you. Most of it is on your phone and under your control; for anything on our server (an account or backup), delete it in the app or email [email protected]. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app.
